It is my pleasure to welcome you as a new member of Congregation B’nai Avraham. We are delighted to have you as part of this very special community.

My wife Penny and I started the community in 1988. At that time, there was no orthodox shul in or near Brooklyn Heights. It was founded in partnership with Rabbi Aaron Raskin, with the dream that we would engage our fellow Jews in the beauty of Torah life. I am proud that the synagogue was named after my grandfathers, Abraham Bronstein (1896-1979) and Abraham Rosen (1889-1970).

Congregation B’nai Avraham has grown significantly in the 30 years since our founding. Initially, we met in our home, then an apartment with barely enough people to make a minyan. Today, we meet in a beautiful brownstone with two minyans during the High Holidays and our very own mikvah. We offer a wide variety of programs, classes, and social events and house a preschool. Hundreds of people pass through our doors each year to enjoy classes, services, Shabbat meals, and Shabbatons. We are like a family and are delighted to have you join us.

I am proud to share this guidebook, which provides an overview of activities in the shul and information on how to get involved. I hope you enjoy learning about everything we offer and will be inspired to get involved.

  • Letter from the Rabbi

Rabbi Aaron L. and Shternie Raskin

Congregation B'nai Avraham is a community based organization servicing the needs of the Jewish populations of Brooklyn Heights and Downtown Brooklyn, by providing prayer services, holiday programs and events, as well as support and assistance to all, regardless of affiliation or background. Our aim is to encourage and enhance Jewish awareness, knowledge and observance by building a warm, welcoming community with activities appealing to both members and non-members. CBA is the only synagogue in the area that provides daily Shacharit and Maariv services, as well as daily classes on every possible subject for men and women alike, from Talmud to Kabbalah. We provide services and programming for singles, families and seniors. Moreover, we are the area's only synagogue with a luxurious women's state-of-the-art Mei Menachem Community Mikvah on the premises. Our doors are open to all Jews, and every member of the synagogue is truly a part of the CBA family.
